Should You Use Abandoned Software?
Neofetch is abandoned. Does it really matter?

10 Things To Do After Installing openSUSE
Is there a DIFFERENCE between running Linux on an Apple ( A R.M.), and running it on an X-86 processor?
worse is better

Noooo! Justin Bieber Linux is the BEST!!!
Nice!
Have you tried QOwnNotes? Despite the horrible name, it actually is a pretty decent application. It features syncing with Nextcloud.
I like to use Logseq. It's foss and avaliable pretty much everywhere. It's got perfect markdown in my opinion so ye.
Hey man, what is the icon theme you are using
i dont like throium because its on a old version
It's not abandoned, it's finished.
I wish the NixOS docs had a few quickstart config layouts ready for those wanting to mess with a functioning system and go from there, like a config file that replicates the current Ubuntu GNOME or Fedora KDE Plasma releases and then a couple of "try these steps to install Steam" / "try these steps to remove Steam" / "rebuild nixos and reboot your system, you will see this and that" manuals.
You forgot about ubuntu dude , how did you miss the ranch on the chicken?!
We need a way to raise funds for these types of software. But most of the software should have a Basic version and a Premium paid version, this way the developers or others would keep it going... It really is not free, like most people think. It takes people hard work and time.
I love the way Matt's mind works
One might even venture to say that it looks like KDE
Generally something like neofetch will continue to work for some time after it's abandoned, but I make it a habit not to use software like that, it just saves me the headache of switching quickly when something eventually breaks. And it's not an "if", it's a "when". I am pretty happy with fastfetch.
Is it possible to add anyone on the left side of the panel?
I can give a suggestion of what I'm using. I'm using VMware to run multiple virtual machines one of them is the firewall another VM is the main server and then on. I feel this gives the most flexibility to test new systems and not worry about your main system.
Manjaro got me into Arch, now daily driving Endeavour with XFCE
Having what graphics card and driver and disk space on the screen is useful.
Dude, you working out!? Looking good! Keep up the vids! Always informative, always fun!
Abandonware on Linux is sad to see because alternatives can be limited.
I haven’t switched just yet because I’m worried about compatibility for nvidia and games
Bro what???
Just minutes ago, I did rm -rf on lib bins lib64 media.... on my company server.... -1 player on server Earth :< I least I still have home folder and maybe reinstalling the ubuntu asap
Future Computers have to be Repairable Modular : users have to use custom components and build their own phones/ mini computer
i use fish because a) ill likely never run scripts from others (nixos btw, likely wont work anyway) b) if...fi is actually the dumbest thing ive ever seen. fish syntax is pretty normal and easy to learn. even wrote my own prompt functions just to learn how it works.
Hexchat released their final version back in February I think. I've been using it forever. I'll probably still use it though. Still works so why not? Now if it's some kind of really important software that requires security updates and patches then yeah I'd probably find something else to use. Especially if my distro of choice abandoned the project. I'd definitely find something else. Normally good devs will give you a heads up in advance though. As far as neofetch goes, as long as it works then why not still use it? I still play many games that are no longer maintained too. Just do your due diligence as far as software goes. Make sure it won't put your data and system at risk if the project(s) are abandoned.
This kind of depends on the amount and range of data sourced from the internets the particular piece of sw gets exposed to.
7:03 - have you tried focus writer?
Joplin would be perfect if it gave the user the choice via the typical File > Save As, to save their files wherever they want locally.
One thing openSUSE users have complained about for years is PackageKit, its high resource usage and how it can interfere with Zypper and other package managers. Even the creator of Gecko Linux (openSUSE spin) uninstalled it. Wonder why if it is not essential, why they include it, when Zypper should be enough.
I just got Fast Fetch, made it output like neofetch and then aliased it to neofetch. This just more sparked my interest in other fetches, I use lots of abandoned software but fast fetch is pretty darn fast lol
I use gnome a lot and wayland too and I was struggling with keybindings a bit but luckily I found a cool program called keyd so now I'm like a gnome magician lol 😂
one of the biggest lies of modern software development is "everything needs maintaining forever". It's simply not true.
As usually, well put in general. My answer is simply ... as was yours ... it depends on What software it is, is it critical for what you do, are there alternatives? Some software products are also just simply Done. Generally people are just so update-trigger-happy, that they don't see the wood for the trees ... no updates?, No new "Features"? Crikey, I must find something new ... What many forget is that security comes at a cost, a lack of new features. Every new line of code in a maintained product is a potential security risk, but people update willy nilly anyhow, just because newer is better, right, giving no second thought to What is being updated or if it has an impact on your use case. It's a double edged sward, that maintained and updated thingy. If you don't care and just update, you're every bit in the risk as you are with unmaintained products. End of "rant" :-D It depends, but you already knew that ... 😀
I'm fine with using abandoned software. Sometimes I fire up Claris Works just to relive my 90s tech school training memories. I don't use it often. I prefer Libre Office. But I like how fast Claris runs on a modern computer. And it does the job.
Regarding the security risk argument, a lot of people love to throw that around about anything old. 9 out of 10 times, it's just based on ignorance. If I play an old DOS game, it's not going to put me at any risk...
Let's put it this way: Using abandoned software generaly is not good idea but there are some rare examples where you can use if you want to even abandoned software. Neofetch is one of those. Neofetch poses no risk even if it isn't mainained anymore because neofetch only fetches data about system and shows it in terminal. Also neofetch isn't software, it is actualy bash script.
10:10 Alter Bridge FTW 🤘🏼
What's the difference between feature complete and abandoned?
Yes should move to
The way you explain Dynamic v Manual (tiling), should it not be called Automatic (Tiler) v Manual ? A new term 'Dualmode' WM should replace Dynamic in the sense of doing both. Let's drop the very confusing word Dynamic in the context of discussing WM's. So let's go with: Automatic, Manual and Dualmode.
I mean, at some point neofetch should start to disfunction, not getting updated to new distros/release ? Or is it working in a smarter way ?
NixOS has lots of capabilities for building from source. Most things are just stored in the binary cache, but if you come across a package that isn’t or you need to make some tweaks to its installation, you’ll end up installing from source but from the safety of having nix do it for you :)
Neofetch is already starting to break in newer systems and hardware. It sometimes displays PopOs as Ubuntu and may sometimes not display correct hardware in very recent cpu. It's probably just a bug, but It's not going to be fixed
Regardless of Arch stability and usability, it’s the bet gateway to actually learn Linux. Arch wiki is just Amazing
I bought a new laptop and i decided to put fastfetch as an alternative. But what really bugs me is that is not reporting the same amount of RAM that's being used. I used neofetch for years to compare distros. So now i have both 😂 and cpufetch too.
This also depends on the dependencies, some update will drive the software unusable in the far future (unless you're using some old VM/container or Nix)
I think I want to go back to gnome those are good extensions
I use Luckybackyp to my local server and it's works fantastic.. 2018 EOL
